JOG / WALK-A-THON !!
This coming Tuesday, Feb.9
 Wednesday, Feb.10

I understand a lot of you work those hours and won't be attending, but for those of you who are able to come, we could really use some help with giving out water to the kids as they do their laps around the playground.  It's a really fun 25 minutes...cheering the kids on and watering them up!  See your room parents if you can help.  Or just come on over to your classroom and grab a water cup!  (We are urging kids who have their own containers to bring them, labeled w/ their name.)  See Document Library, right hand column, for your class day & time.

Hello Room Parents of Joggers!

By now, the children should have brought home the pledge forms and envelopes.

Here's what we need:

1.  Get your fellow parents excited!!! For any class that has 100% participation (meaning all children bring back an envelope with at least the pledge, of course, we hope there will be more than one, but.....) there will be an ICE CREAM PARTY!!!

2.  Help us get parents signed up to volunteer to work.

3.  Remind parents to label water canteens for their child and/or donate paper cups.

Easy Peasy, right!!

We can't make this event a huge success without your help!!

In gratitude,
Madeline Peterson and Jenni Hetrick,
Co-Chairs

Let's all get on board and do this! A lot of you may be familiar with this from pre-school. Raising money for Franklin has never been easier. Just fill out the form and go shopping at the same places you shop at already, and Franklin gets a percentage. How much easier can it get? Please, take the time to do the initial sign up, it just takes a second, and you'll never have to think about it again.  Can you imagine how much money we can make if all the families at Franklin sign up for this?

IN OUR COMMUNITY !!!

All About Seasonal Vegetables

I'm introducing a series of fun, affordable cooking classes designed around cooking with seasonal vegetables - from the garden, the farmers' market or your local CSA. (Community Supported Agriculture)

We are lucky - very lucky here in LA to be able to grow vegetables all year round.  We have cool and warm weather crops and our seasons are long. Some varieties grow naturally every day of the year.

Having a few extra recipes up your sleeve for what to make with seasonal harvests can come in handy, especially if you grow your own at home or support CSA.

I'm introducing the classes at $48. Class limit is 12 people.

Shelley Marks is our teacher. She'll demonstrate the dishes of the day (see below), and get you to prepare them. We have a nice big kitchen in which to work.  And eat! There's a light meal for everyone to enjoy and discuss as part of class. Handouts include recipes and gardening tips.

Bring your favorite apron (a prize for the most retro-chic).

Here's the schedule:  Classes take place in Silverlake.

Friday, Feb 12
6pm - 8:30pm
Winter Garden Supper with wild greens (arugula, mizuna, etc.) and seasonal fruit (blood orange and grapefruit), winter squash soup, sorrel pesto on pasta and salmon.

Saturday, Feb 20
2pm - 4:30pm
Easy Pureed Soups with parsnip, carrot, celery and asparagus.

Thursday, March 4
6pm - 8:30pm
Early Spring Garden Supper with beet salad, broccoli soup and fresh pea ravioli.

Email me: tara@silverlakefarms.com or call me at 323-644-3700 if you'd like to register.  Please specify which class and for how many people. I'll send you confirmation with details.  Have a great day and enjoy your local veggies!   Tara

As always, Tom La Bonge came through with some serious support for our school. His office donated all of the tables and many of the canopies that we needed to make our Halloween Carnival a success! THANK YOU TOM LABONGE. A special thanks to Tom LaBonge's staff: Jeanne Min, Gigi Galias and Carolyn Ramsay.

GOT LICE?

If you are stressed out over the lice situation like some of us are, then maybe this will be of some help.  One of our dads, Keith Kurlander, recommended at the FOF meeting last night, a product that he swears by.
"
We tried the Rid shampoo, olive oil, a lice whisperer, plastic combs and the main thing we found THAT WORKED everyday was the NIT-FREE metal comb. This comb has micro barbs that actually pull out the nits (eggs) so that you can see them when you hold the comb up to the light. It's also good to do the Rid shampoo or an equivalent once every 8 days, that's the lice hatching cycle."  You can find out more about it here:

ATTENTION
"GREEN LOVERS"

The goal of Franklin's Beverage and Green Committee is to develop an environmental awareness throughout our school and especially at our fundraisers and school-wide activities. We want to try to make our events as close to waste free as possible. To this end, we encourage the school community to use reusable water bottles and other products. At our fundraisers, we use compostable products and plan our events in such a way that the impact on the environment is minimal. There is plenty to learn and plenty to share and we are eager to recruit a few new members. If you have a bit of time and interest, please join the Green committee by contacting Aniko Alexovics at patrickandaniko@yahoo.com. We will get together in the next few weeks to discuss the upcoming fundraisers and new goals for this school year.
